Homeschool Monday: Book Reviews

I am a few days late on this post. Sorry about that. I have found that finding curriculum, at a decent price, has taken a lot of my time lately. I *think* I have everything set on curriculum for this year, minus one grammar set which we may have to put off until next year.

I have a three more books and one curriculum set to tell you all about today. Some I loved, some I plan to buy, some I will just check out from the library when needed.

The first is a curriculum set: Story of the World by Wise. This set is part of the classical education mindset of teaching. This set is full of fun activities for all ages such as coloring pages, maps and crafts that go along with each lesson. I plan on using this set for my first grader this year and probably next year and possibly the next after that. I have heard that it takes around three years to get through the entire book. I am borrowing the text and activity book from a friend but was able to find the test book for $7 (including shipping) from eBay. (I will discuss another book by Wise next week. Some call it the Homeschoolers Bible.)

I was excited to see the next two books at my library. I was expecting a section by section assessment of what my children should know before moving on the the next grades (this was when I was planning on starting kindergarten with my four year old, I have recently decided to start K-4 Abeka with her instead). Although these books are nothing like what I had expected, they are wonderful supplements. Each book is broken down into sections with activites in each section. The first grade book (I spent most of my time looking through this one) has a large math section with math worksheets. The history section has activites with questions. Despite this book not being a comprehensive list, I do recommend homeschoolers check this book out and purchase if you are needing some supplemental material. There are several sellers on Amazon that are selling it for $4-5 including shipping.

I had checked out this books because...well...who wouldn't like to homeschool their child for free? I wasn't able to take much away from this book but it is a great resource. Check it out. Read it through. Purchase and add to your library if necessary. I do not plan on purchasing this book but I do plan on going back to it from time to time.

There you go. Three more books down, two to go. Next week I will discuss Wise's The Well-Trained Mind as well as Gathercole's The Well-Adjusted Child.
