love your neighbor

"Love your neighbor" this statement can be interpreted many ways. Some see this as loving your actually neighbor, as in next door neighbor. Some see this as loving those in your community. Some think of this on a global scale. I am primarily speaking to those right now. I appreciate companies that give to those in need. I especially appreciate those that have the buy one give one motto.
First we have the one that is probably best known for this motto, Toms Shoes.

Who doesn't love a great pair of shoes that only cost $45. On top of this not only do you get one pair of shoes for $45 but you get two!!! It is a great feeling knowing that you are giving shoes to a person in need.

In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.

As of September 2010, TOMS has given over one million pairs of new shoes to children in need through Giving Partners around the world. (info taken from Toms website)

Second is a company that makes adorable baby blankets, Happy Blankie.

What adorable blankets!! These blankets are not only cute but can be customized. For as little as $35 for a small blanket you can own one for your loved one and give one to a child in need.

Happy Blankie is donating blankies to children in need all over the world. YOU will be able to make a difference by choosing where you would like to give a blankie. When you receive your blankie you will be able to follow the instructions on the "giving is cool" tag in order to donate your second blanket.(info taken from Happy Blankie's website)

Thirdly there is an eye glass company, Warby Parker.

Where can you purchase a pair of glasses with the lenses for only $95? I have vision insurance and it still costs me around $100 per pair. Don't like to shop online?? You can request up to six pairs of glasses to be shipped to you so that you can try them on! How great is that!

Eyewear with a Purpose.
We believe that everyone has the right to see. Unfortunately, millions of people around the world today don’t have access to proper vision care. To help address this problem, Warby Parker partners with renowned non-profits, such as RestoringVision.org, to deliver one pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair that we sell. In doing so, we enable you to share the gift of vision with someone who can’t see today and give them the opportunity to read, to work and to live a fuller life. If you know of any other companies like this please let me know. I would love to feature them on my blog!

  1. What great companies! I don't really know any like that myself... there's a great organization my family and I support, though. It's called Kiva.org, and it was created to help poor entrepreneurs around the world start businesses. It's different from most charities, though, because instead of donating money, you lend these people money. Then, once they get a business going, they repay you and you can either withdraw your money or relend it. It's not the same kind of thing as the companies you just featured, but I thought I'd share because I love Kiva so much. :)
